Prompt: My unit theme is the importance of growth, change and the cycle of life. We’re reading Tuck Everlasting and my theme really aligns with the major theme of that novel. I found a great poem that was actually published by a middle school aged student titled The Circle of Life. I thought it made some great points and would really give students a starting point with their model poem.

Pre-Writing:

  1. Think about the events of Tuck Everlasting thus far and the arguments that the Tucks have made for eternal life. Specifically, think about Mr. Tuck and his conversation with Winnie Foster in the boat about the importance of the cycle of life.

  2. Write down a few milestones or accomplishments in your life that might not be as important if you were to never die.

  3. Brainstorm some things that you would like to do in the next years of living that you feel like would make your life worthwhile and important.

Writing your poem:

1. Start each stanza with the following line:

“Life is [blank]” or “My life is [blank]

2. In the 2 to 4 lines, describe the importance of the cycle of life and the ending of life drawing on the events that you thought about from the novel.

3. In the next 2 to 4 lines, write about your milestones and accomplishments as they have added importance to your life and the on-going process of it. Be specific in your descriptions and reasoning for their importance.

4. In the last 2 to 4 lines, put the things you hope to accomplish in the remainder of your life to add to your importance and enhance the idea of life’s cycle.

5. Finally, give your poem a title that is meaningful to you and your creation!

Going Through Life

By: Jade Garrett

Life is a turning wheel but it is meant to end

People come and go but they’re always changing

To stay in the same place forever would be impossible

And anything but delightful

Life is a trophy full of accomplishments

Although I stop growing taller my mind grows daily

I build upon my experiences for a better life

Life is a goal meant to be set and strived for

In a few short months I’ll be a successful college graduate

Prepared for the life I’ve always hoped for myself

And ready to change the growing and turning lives of those I teach

Circle Of Life

© Carly Nasch

Life is a carousel. Always going forward, never going back.

Existence is a hard thing to keep when you stop trying.

To live a life, you must want to live.

To want to live you must find a way.

When all hope is lost you must stand tall.

When all others retreat you must prevail.

You are the conscious inside your head.

You create your own destiny.

Life is a very hard thing to keep

when your life does not always go the way you plan.

Fight for your life and the right to keep dreaming.

If you feel you were gifted, share your gift.

If you feel you were cursed, fix it.

As you get older, your life becomes a challenge.

Who are you?

What do you want in life?

What will you be?

What is your purpose in life?

If you worry, these things will turn into burdens.

But if you hold on to them in the back of your mind,

all of the answers will come in time.

Life is a carousel, always going forward never going back.

Look to the future not to the past.
